Microsoft Teams Room & Zoom Room Feature Matrix

Microsoft Teams Room & Zoom Room Feature Matrix

There are quite a few opinions on why Zoom or Microsoft Teams has the better UC platform including features, value, capabilities and security. I think we can all agree both UC platforms are iterating at lightning speed and the capabilities and value of each UC platform is tied to the end user’s business and functional needs.  Below you will find a side by side feature list of the Zoom Room system running on a Windows PC and the Microsoft Teams Room system. To caveat this is focused on the capabilities from the room systems themselves not the individual UC clients.

What should you choose? Well that depends on the use cases and there are too many to list here.   If you have a medical facility or field hospital where auto answer and FECC are requirements Zoom has you covered.  Additionally, If you're looking for a turn key video solution with native applications that have highly customizable features in regards to security and a plethora of Audio, Video, Content options Zoom is also a great fit.

If you subscribe to M365, Teams is already included which means you need to weigh the costs, functionality and feature set of introducing a separate UC platform outside of M365.  Microsoft Teams platform is extremely extensible with Bots, Wiki's, Graph API and Crestron provides room controls and automation to the MTR through API integrations with our Pageflip.   Teams is also built with the principal of least privilege and security throughout the platform that requires minimal administrative configuration.

I love both these platforms as they solve business challenges for my customers, and they drive each other to be better.

I am sure everyone has an opinion and feel free to leave comments on the topic.  In the meantime, here is the fluid feature matrix base specifically on room functionality.  If you see anything wrong or have additions let me know and I will update the list:

1 Start an instant meeting from MTR can be through the proximity join feature or by inviting one or more participants to the meeting
2 MTR system will leverage the SIP URL dialing feature, but it is dependent on third party VaaS service to support an ICE/Turn proxy.
3 Modern Authentication and Authorization is provided for the room credentials, eliminating the need for additional meeting passwords for internal
participants. Lobby controls prevent unauthorized users that have not been invited attempting to join.
4 Only the host ost meeting pin code is required to join as the leader.  Use case is also not applicable as the account credentials are protected using
Modern Authentication  and the device is internal to the organization.  User can simply turn video off when joining a call.
